This blog post will be constantly updated with definitions and explanations of constructions terms from my other blog posts. I hope this blog will be one that you continue to look back on when you see a word/words underlined and in red.

Sub-flooring:

This term came up in my second blog post about Squeaky Floors in your house. The sub-flooring are 4 foot by 8 foot sheets of OSB that are laid on top of your floor joist. Sometimes it is also referred to as the decking. You need this sub-flooring in order to continue on with the construction process. Once all of this is installed, the contractor can now lay out walls and stand them up. This is need to walk within the different rooms in your house. Later in the process your carpet, hard, tile and any other type of flooring will be installed and attached to this.

Oriented strand board (OSB):

Also known as flakeboard, sterling board and aspenite in British English, is a type of engineered lumber similar to particle board, formed by adding adhesives and then compressing layers of wood strands (flakes) in specific orientations. Some people also refer to it as plywood.

Base board:

This is the narrow wooden board that is running along the bottom of your walls. It will be tight to the bottom of the floor and will but into the trim around your doors.

Bottom Plate:

A bottom plate is the board (plate) that runs horizontally with the floor. The studs for the wall will be nailed into this and the top plate. The plate keeps the studs inline and straight by running along the sub-floor.

R-Value:

A measure of a material's resistance to heat flow at a given thickness of material. The term is the reciprocal of the U value. The higher the R value, the more effective the particular insulation. Expressed as R-11, R-20, and so on....

Batt and Blanket Insulation:

Thermal or sound-insulating material, such as fiber glass or expanded shale, that has been fashioned into a flexible, blanket-like form, often with a vapor barrier on one side. Batt insulation is manufactured in dimensions that facilitate its installation between the studs or joists of a frame construction

Loose Fill Insulation:

Any of several thermal insulation materials in the form of granules, fibers, or other types of pieces that can be poured, pumped, or placed by hand.

Spray Foam Insulation:

Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) is a spray-applied plastic that can form a continuous insulation and air sealing barrier on walls, roofs, around corners, and on all contoured surfaces. It is made by mixing and reacting unique liquid components at the job site to create foam. For a more in depth look at what Open Cell and Closed Cell foam insulation is, click on this link: http://www.thomasnet.com/articles/plastics-rubber/closed-cell-open-cell

Pergola:

A pergola is a garden feature forming a shaded walkway, passageway, or sitting area of vertical posts or pillars that usually support cross-beams and a sturdy open lattice, often upon which woody vines are trained.
